Ecobank marks 40th anniversary with its Founding Members

Ecobank Group, the leading Pan-African banking institution, marked a historic milestone with two major events as part of the Bank’s 40th anniversary celebrations, marking four decades of innovation, integration and impact across the African continent.

These are the unveiling of a commemorative plaque honouring the seventy visionaries who created the Bank forty years ago, and an exceptional gala evening that brought together distinguished guests from across Africa and beyond.

The plaque unveiling ceremony, held at Ecobank group Headquarters in Lomé, featured some of the bank’s Founding members and paid tribute to their bold vision and determination.

Speaking at the ceremony, Jeremy Awori, Group Chief Executive Officer of Ecobank Group, highlighted the deep significance of the Monument: “This Plaque is a lasting tribute to the seventy Founders who dared to imagine a Pan-African bank when such a vision seemed impossible. It connects our origins in Togo to our presence today across Africa, and it reminds every Ecobanker of the important mission we carry into the future.”

The Plaque lists the names of the seventy original shareholders from ten ECOWAS member states, whose collective conviction in 1985 led to the establishment of Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI).

Their aspiration was clear: to create a world-class financial institution owned by Africans, serving Africa’s needs, and strengthening regional integration.

Papa Madiaw Ndiaye, Group Chairman of Ecobank Group, paid tribute to the Founders’ legacy: “The Founders’ Plaque stands as a permanent recognition of the men and women whose courage, unity and determination built Ecobank. It is also a symbol of our governance and institutional continuity, and a reminder to future generations of the responsibility to safeguard and advance the mission entrusted to us.”

Representing the Founders and their families, Fogan Sossah expressed gratitude to Ecobank’s leadership, employees and partners for preserving and strengthening the institution over the past four decades.

“The Monument inspires the next generation to carry the torch forward, to uphold unity, integrity and service to Africa,” he said.

“The Founders planted the seed; it is now our collective duty to ensure the tree continues to grow.”

Later that evening, Ecobank hosted a gala celebration at Hôtel 2 Février, attended by high-profile guests, including government officials, business leaders, and partners.

The evening featured official speeches, artistic performances, and recognition moments.

A special tribute was paid to the Founding members, along with awards presented to Ecobank entities that earned distinctions this year.

The ceremony also honoured employees with the longest service, reflecting Ecobank’s appreciation for loyalty and commitment.

Since opening its first affiliate in Lomé in 1988, Ecobank has expanded into a continent-wide financial network, present in more African countries than any other financial institution.

With operations in thirty-two countries in Africa, an affiliate in France and international offices in major global financial hubs, Ecobank plays a pivotal role in connecting African businesses, governments and communities.
