The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced plans to replace more than 250,000 Nuri Kamstrup prepaid meters within one month as part of its ongoing meter replacement exercise.
The operation which is part of an ongoing meter replacement exercise is scheduled to begin on Monday, September 2, 2024, and will continue until the end of the month.
Affected areas
The replacement of Nuri Kamstrup prepaid meters exercise will cover several areas, including Makola, Legon, Roman Ridge, Dodowa, Adenta, Kwabenya, Korle-bu, Achimota, Kaneshie, Dansoman, and Prampram, among others.
Improving the accuracy of energy accounting
According to ECG’s Director of Communication, Mr. William Boateng, the initiative is part of ECG’s broader efforts to upgrade its metering system and improve the accuracy of energy accounting.
935,962 meters being replaced
In total, ECG aims to replace 935,962 meters, including postpaid, non-smart prepaid and faulty meters.
The meters being replaced are BXC, PNS, Nuri, BOT and Ecash 1, 2, 3, 4.
488,223 meters replaced so far
As of the end of July, the company has successfully replaced 488,223 meters with new smart prepaid models.
Meter Management System compliant meters
These new meters are compliant with ECG’s Meter Management System (MMS) and are designed to enhance the efficiency and reliability of the electricity supply.
PURC guidelines on life span of meters
The meter replacement program is in line with the guidelines of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), which mandates the replacement of meters every 10 years.
Many of the older meters have already exceeded their lifespan, making the upgrades necessary.
Remotely top up credits using the ECG Power App
The new smart prepaid meters offer several advantages, including the ability to remotely top up credits using the ECG Power App or by dialing *226#.
This feature allows customers to recharge their meters at any time and from any location, providing greater convenience and flexibility.
ECG is also working to ensure that areas where the new meters are installed have adequate internet service to support their operation, as the smart meters require a strong internet connection for optimal performance.
The meter replacement exercise is part of ECG’s Loss Reduction Programme (LRP), aimed at reducing energy losses and improving the overall efficiency of the electricity distribution system.
