Vice-President and 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on the party’s supporters to cease the blame game following their electoral defeat and focus on rebuilding for a victorious return in 2028.
Faith and hope for the future
Addressing some constituency executives at his Cantonments residence, Dr. Bawumia expressed his faith in God and optimism for a brighter future.
“I have abiding belief in God. Our ways are not His ways. I know most of us are sad because this is not what we expected, but we should have hope for a brighter future,” he said.
He reassured the party faithful that, despite the loss, the NPP has not lost the ultimate battle, urging them to unite and rally behind the leadership to reclaim power in the next election cycle.
Reflecting on the 2024 defeat
Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the party’s defeat, attributing it to a significant drop in voter support.
“Our votes reduced by 40% from what we garnered in 2020,” he stated, emphasizing the need for deeper reflection and strategic planning.
He called on party members to resolve internal differences and work towards strengthening the NPP’s ranks ahead of 2028.
Support and encouragement from party members
Prominent members of the party, including Mr. Valentino Nii Noi Nortey (Parliamentary Candidate for Klottey Korle), Mr. Jerry Ahmed Shiab (MP-Elect for Weija-Gbawe), Elder Emmanuel Tobin (MP-Elect for Anyaa Sowutuom), and Madam Gloria Owusu (MP-Elect for Trobu), offered their unwavering support to Dr. Bawumia.
They encouraged him to remain steadfast and assured him of their commitment to work tirelessly to secure victory in the 2028 elections.
Supporters rally behind Dr. Bawumia
NPP supporters from constituencies such as Weija-Gbawe, Klottey Korle, Trobu, Ayawaso East, and Anyaa Sowutuom gathered at the Vice-President’s residence, singing party songs and cheering to boost his morale.
Their spirited display highlighted the party’s resilience and readiness to begin the work necessary to reclaim power in the next election.
A call for unity and renewal
Dr. Bawumia’s message underscores the importance of unity and reflection as the NPP navigates its path forward.
His leadership and the collective resolve of party members will be crucial as the NPP sets its sights on a strong comeback in 2028.
President-Elect John Dramani Mahama garnered 6.3 million (6,328,397) votes, representing 56.55% of the valid votes cast, while Dr. Bawumia, managed 4,657,304 votes, or 41.61%.
Over 2 million votes lost
This revealed massive voter apathy within the NPP.
Over two million (2,073,283) voters who supported the NPP in the 2020 elections chose not to vote in the 2024 polls leading to their electoral defeat.
NPP vote decline from 2020 to 2024
In 2020, President Nana Akufo-Addo garnered 6.7 million (6,730,587) votes, representing 51.30% of total ballots cast.
In contrast, the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, secured just over 4.6 million (4,657,304) votes, a significant drop to 41.61%.
This 2 million vote drop is a clear indication of voter disengagement within the NPP’s traditional support base.
If all 6.7 million voters who supported the NPP in 2020 had returned to vote in 2024, the party would have won the election decisively.
