Former Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has announced his intention to contest for the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential race when nominations are officially opened.
His declaration signals the entry of a respected technocrat and reform-driven leader into the race to lead the party into the next chapter of its political journey.
“With humility, conviction, and a resolute heart, I, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, declare my intent to run for the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), should nominations be officially opened by the party,” he said.
His decision to vie for the NPP’s top leadership role reflects growing calls within the party and among sections of the public for a leader who can combine technocratic competence with political foresight.
Known for his calm demeanor and data-driven approach to governance, Dr. Adutwum has earned praise for pushing for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education as a cornerstone for Ghana’s long-term development.
By declaring his intent ahead of the formal opening of nominations, Dr. Adutwum positions himself not only as a forward-looking candidate but also as a unifier committed to the values and aspirations of the NPP.
His statement underscores respect for due process and internal democracy within the party, while also offering a glimpse into the kind of leadership he is prepared to offer — one grounded in humility, driven by conviction, and anchored in service.
As the NPP prepares for a competitive flagbearer race, Dr. Adutwum’s entry adds intellectual weight and developmental vision to the contest.
Whether he can translate his ministerial achievements into broad party support remains to be seen, but his announcement has undoubtedly reshaped the conversation about the future direction of the party and, by extension, the nation.
The party officially announced January 31, 2026, as the date for its presidential primaries to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
The decision was confirmed following a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Accra, marking the beginning of the party’s strategic preparations for the next electoral cycle.
According to party leadership, the early announcement is aimed at ensuring a transparent, fair, and well-organized process that will give aspirants ample time to campaign and engage delegates across the country.
The party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, emphasised that the timeline aligns with the NPP’s commitment to internal democracy and unity.
Justin Frimpong Koduah clarified that the timing of the presidential primaries will not be subject to approval by the delegates conference, as the National Council has already exercised its mandate to approve it.
