The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus in Parliament has called for the dismissal of the Executive Secretary of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCa), Prof. Edward Appiah, and the Board Chairperson, Prof. Vincent Assanfuah, over the printing of the 2025 Physical Education and Health Core teaching manual for senior high schools.
Mr. Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, speaking on behalf of the Caucus at Parliament House on Thursday, said the manuals contained references to sexual orientation that were inconsistent with Ghanaian cultural, religious, and moral values.
He argued that the development and printing of the manuals had also resulted in financial loss to the state.
The Minority demanded the immediate withdrawal of the manual and a full parliamentary inquiry into its approval, funding, and the role of external partners in the process.
They further called for a comprehensive review of teaching manuals with the involvement of religious leaders, traditional authorities, civil society organisations, and education experts to ensure that Ghanaian perspectives on sexuality are properly defined.
The Caucus also criticised the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing it of hypocrisy and selective urgency in handling issues related to sexuality.
They noted that while the Majority passed 33 bills under certificates of urgency, the much-debated LGBTQ+ bill was removed from the Order Paper during the Second Meeting of the First Session of Parliament without explanation.
Describing the contents of the manual as troubling, the Minority insisted that the government must provide answers to Parliament and the public on how such material was approved for use in schools.
