Reigning TGMA Highlife Artiste of the Year, Fameye, believes that it will take collaborative efforts to sustain and revitalise the Highlife genre so that it is appealing both locally and worldwide
Fameye was recently honoured at the Authentic Highlife Night organised by the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) for positively contributing to the sustainability of Highlife.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Fameye stated that Highlife has suffered some negative stereotypes over recent years, which have contributed to its low consumption among music lovers.
“Highlife will continue to suffer certain setbacks if we don’t accept and feel proud of the genre. We need to consume more Highlife and move away from the stigmatisation of considering Highlife as something ‘local’.
“So Ghanaians need to come together collectively and champion Highlife music and feel proud about it. We need to play and stream more Highlife music, and till we feel proud about it, it will continue to have setbacks.
“No musician can single-handedly revitalise the genre; it takes all stakeholders as well as music lovers to preserve Highlife,” said Fameye.
When asked about his new track “Now or Never” featuring Stonebwoy, Fameye expressed delight about finally revealing his new project, which is from his next album due out later this year.
“I really love the verse from Stonebwoy, and I picked him because of his exceptional vocal prowess, and he was the right person to put on the song. I am very glad we worked some magic together,” Fameye told the Ghana News Agency.
The song is out on all major streaming platforms. There’s also a visualiser video available on YouTube.
