The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into a viral video in which an American citizen, Arianna Naomi Mackey, claims she was kidnapped by five masked men.
she alleged that the masked men were police officers on snap-check duty in Accra, who robbed him of an unspecified amount of money.
A press release issued by Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, Public Relations Officer of the CID, said preliminary investigations showed that the video was recorded at a hotel in Accra where Ms Mackey and two companions were staying.
The statement said the investigation also confirmed that they checked out of the hotel on December 5, 2025, and checks at the Kotoka International Airport indicated that Ms Mackey left the country on the same day.
Police subsequently contacted the alleged victim to assist with the investigation.
However, she informed them that she was no longer in Ghana and could not provide the names of the supposed officers involved or the number plate of the vehicle they allegedly used, the statement said.
“Police further requested the contact details of her friend in Ghana, who she said was with her at the time of the incident,” it said.
She, however, indicated that her friend did not want to be involved in the investigation.
Ms Mackey has since deleted the video from her page, and further attempts by investigators to reach her through WhatsApp calls and messages had been unsuccessful, the statement said.
She had declined to respond and later blocked the investigative team, it said.
Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to secure her cooperation through appropriate diplomatic channels.
“The Ghana Police Service treats such allegations very seriously and remains committed to uncovering the facts in this case,” the statement said.
