Bawumia rallies NPP for inclusive comeback in 2028

Former Vice President and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on party members to adopt a more inclusive and unifying posture as the NPP seeks to recover from its defeat in the December 2024 general elections.

Speaking during a stop in Hohoe as part of the party’s ongoing national “Thank You Tour,” Dr Bawumia declared that the NPP’s political comeback hinges on its ability to open its doors to all Ghanaians, regardless of their background, region, or religious affiliation.
“Our comeback requires having open arms to all,” Dr Bawumia told a crowd of enthusiastic party supporters.
“We must reach out to every Ghanaian, regardless of region, religion or background, and prove that the NPP is a home for national progress, not narrow interests.”
The remarks come as the NPP leadership undertakes a post-election reflection tour to thank supporters and gather feedback across the country.
The Volta Region, traditionally considered an opposition stronghold, was strategically chosen to underscore the party’s commitment to building bridges and expanding its base beyond traditional strongholds.
Dr Bawumia’s message in Hohoe was clear: for the NPP to rebound effectively ahead of future elections, it must demonstrate genuine openness and empathy towards all communities, especially those that have historically felt marginalised or excluded.
As part of this broader inclusivity agenda, he announced a proposal to establish regional liaison committees across the country.
These bodies, he said, would engage local stakeholders and report their concerns directly to national party structures, ensuring that community-level voices influence policy decisions.
“These committees will ensure that every voice is heard and that our policies reflect the aspirations of all communities,” Dr Bawumia explained, adding that such mechanisms were essential for rebuilding trust and crafting policies grounded in local realities.
He further urged party members to prioritise grassroots mobilisation by intensifying door-to-door outreach and listening actively to the concerns of ordinary citizens.
In his view, reconnecting with communities at the local level is the foundation upon which the party’s future success must be built.
“Let us go back to the people—not just with promises, but with ears ready to listen and hearts ready to serve,” he said.
The event in Hohoe also served as an emotional moment of gratitude, with Dr Bawumia expressing heartfelt appreciation to NPP supporters in the Volta Region.
He commended their resilience in the face of political headwinds and urged them to become ambassadors for the party’s renewed spirit of unity and openness.
“With unity, humility and open arms, we will transform our setback into a powerful comeback,” he said, to thunderous applause and a standing ovation from delegates.
The Volta Region leg of the Thank You Tour is part of a broader national effort by the NPP to re-energise its grassroots following its electoral loss.
As the 2028 election cycle looms on the horizon, Dr Bawumia’s message in Hohoe may serve as a defining theme for the NPP’s reinvention: a call for reconciliation, renewal, and rebuilding—one community at a time.
A party at the crossroads
The 2024 defeat was a painful but necessary wake-up call for the New Patriotic Party.
Regaining the confidence of the electorate will require humility, hard work, unity, and a renewed focus on serving the people — not ruling over them.
Engaging directly with members, respecting their feedback, and addressing their concerns would be critical if the NPP hoped to regain the trust of the Ghanaian people.

‘Thank You Tour’
As the NPP embarks on ‘Thank You Tour’ and plots a path toward renewal, the lessons of 2024 will remain a powerful reminder: no party is invincible, and the will of the people must never be taken for granted.
The tour, themed “In All Things, Give Thanks to God” (1 Thessalonians 5:18), underscores the Party’s enduring commitment to acknowledging divine providence throughout its political journey.
Beyond expressing gratitude, the initiative will offer the 2024 Presidential Candidate and the Party’s Campaign Team a valuable opportunity to reconnect with grassroots supporters and reaffirm their deep appreciation for the collective efforts that fueled the electoral campaign.
The nationwide exercise will culminate in interfaith national thanksgiving services, uniting Christian and Islamic communities in a shared celebration of faith, resilience, and national unity.
The tour commenced in the Western Region on April 26, 2025, before progressing through all sixteen regions of Ghana.
Key strongholds, including the Ashanti Region feature prominently in the itinerary from April 29 to May 1 and the Greater Accra Region from 10 to 12 May.
The Central Region will host the final events of the tour on Wednesday, June 4, 2025.
Each regional engagement included constituency-level gatherings, fostering direct interactions between Party leadership and the rank-and-file.
These meetings aim to strengthen Party unity, uplift morale, and energize supporters for future political activities.
The NPP has encouraged all faithful to actively participate in this national expression of gratitude by attending the events organised within their respective regions and constituencies. Regional and constituency gatherings will serve as vibrant platforms for celebrating the Party’s shared victories and renewing its commitment to the future.
Party leaders believe that this initiative will not only deepen the NPP’s bond with its supporters but also promote a stronger culture of appreciation, unity, and democratic engagement within the Party and the broader Ghanaian society.
The tour will conclude with solemn interfaith thanksgiving services, affirming the Party’s belief in the power of national cohesion and spiritual reflection as foundations for enduring political success.
