The Chief of Dompoase in the Adansi Traditional Area of the Ashanti Region, Nana Okofo Kwabena Bonsu II, has been hospitalised after being struck by a stray bullet during musket firing at a funeral.

He was attending the funeral rites of the late mother of the Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive, Mrs Faustilove Appiah Kannin, together with other dignitaries and traditional leaders.

The incident occurred while the Chief and his delegation were exchanging greetings with the Omanhene of Asebu Kwamankese and other chiefs present.

During the ceremony, one of the Omanhene’s subjects accidentally discharged his musket, and the stray bullet struck the Dompoase Chief.

Nana Okofo Kwabena Bonsu II was immediately taken to the hospital and is reported to be responding well to treatment.

Reports stated that the Police swiftly apprehended a 30-year-old man, Nana Yaw Dankwa, who is currently assisting officers with their investigations. The injured chief received medical attention and has since been discharged.

Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene noted that the incident reinforces the significance of the temporary restriction on firearms at funerals and traditional gatherings.

“The directive remains a vital public safety measure designed to protect lives, prevent injuries, and ensure that community events are conducted in a peaceful and dignified atmosphere,” he said.

He also called on the public to stay calm and cooperate with security personnel as they carry out their responsibilities.

The Obuasi shooting comes months after a July incident in which the Kusasi Chief in Asawase, Abdul-Malik Azenbe, was fatally shot at his residence by unidentified attackers.

According to eyewitnesses, two individuals on a motorbike—one reportedly armed with an AK-47—opened fire before escaping. Azenbe, who had been enskinned as Kadi Naaba only three months prior, was later pronounced dead at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

State security officials visited the family of the late chief and assured them of a comprehensive investigation.

The individual involved has been arrested.
