Asante Kotoko claimed a narrow 1–0 victory over arch-rivals Hearts of Oak in a tense and dramatic Super Clash at the Accra Sports Stadium, courtesy of Morifing Donzo’s first goal for the club.
The encounter attracted thousands of passionate fans, creating an electrifying atmosphere befitting Ghana’s greatest football rivalry. Kotoko started brightly, dictating play and pressing high.
Saaka Dauda nearly opened the scoring early on with a curling effort that missed by inches, before missing another close-range chance set up by Peter Amidu Acquah.
Hearts, led by coach Didi Dramani, gradually found their rhythm and almost struck on the counter. Frank Duku’s overhit pass denied Hamza Issah a clear chance, while Baba Adamu’s header from the ensuing corner flew wide.
Moments later, Duku forced Kotoko goalkeeper Camara into a smart save at the near post.
Kotoko looked dangerous from set pieces, with Donzo flicking on a long throw that Gyau headed narrowly wide.
The breakthrough came just before halftime when Amidu Acquah was brought down in the box by Amankwah Baafi.
Donzo confidently converted the resulting penalty, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and sparking wild celebrations among the Porcupine Warriors’ supporters.
The second half saw Hearts push hard for an equaliser, but Kotoko’s disciplined defense held firm.
Despite late pressure from the Phobians, Karim Zito’s men remained resolute to secure a well-earned win and boost their early-season ambitions.
After the match, Zito praised his team’s resilience and focus, calling the result “a morale booster ahead of upcoming fixtures.” Dramani expressed disappointment but promised a strong response from his side.
Once again, the Super Clash delivered its trademark intensity and drama, underscoring the fierce rivalry between Ghana’s two most successful football clubs.
