Women in Poultry, FSRP to serve free grilled chicken to promote local poultry

Accra will come alive tomorrow, Tuesday, April 29, 2025, as the Women In Poultry Value Chain (WIPVaC), in collaboration with the West Africa Food System Resilience Programme (FSRP), treat the public to free, hot, tasty, and nutritious grilled chicken served with kenkey, pepper, and fried yam.
The initiative, dubbed the “Chicken Road Show,” is part of activities marking WIPVaC’s 8th anniversary.
The event, to be held at the forecourt of CLOGSAG Headquarters within the Ministries enclave, promises a vibrant atmosphere with music, surprise guest appearances, side attractions, and a promotional sale of fresh, frozen, homegrown chicken at affordable prices.

Need to consume local chicken
The collaboration between WIPVaC and FSRP underscores a shared mission to promote the consumption of locally produced chicken, support women in agribusiness, and boost Ghana’s poultry sector.
Dr. Mrs. Victoria Afua Norgbey, National President of WIPVaC, explained that the initiative also highlights the impact of the FSRP’s direct support to poultry farmers.
According to her, 60 poultry farmers across Central, Greater Accra, Eastern, Volta, and Ashanti Regions — selected from WIPVaC’s 1,200 members nationwide — have benefited from FSRP’s Poultry Intensification Scheme (PIS).
She disclosed that the support package included input credit for 50,000 birds, poultry feed, and four different types of vaccines. So far, 25,000 birds have already been supplied to the beneficiaries, enabling them to complete their first cycle of broiler production under the scheme.

Promoting gender mainstreaming in poultry farming
Francesca Pobee-Hayford, Gender-Based Violence Specialist at FSRP, emphasized the importance of supporting WIPVaC as part of efforts to increase women’s participation in agriculture.
She noted that the broader FSRP project, covering 300,000 farmers, aims to ensure women represent at least 40% of all beneficiaries.
“This collaboration is not just about promoting chicken; it is about empowering women, enhancing food security, and building resilience across the food system,” she said.

A driving force for women in agribusiness
Founded to unite women across the poultry value chain, WIPVaC brings together aggregators of maize and soya, suppliers of day-old chicks, dealers in poultry inputs such as fishmeal, concentrates, and drugs, as well as poultry farmers, egg sellers, chicken distributors, and processors of poultry products.

Their collective mission is to create new opportunities for women, stimulate agricultural development, and contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s economy.

Building on past successes
This latest event follows a similar Chicken Road Show staged by FSRP during the National Farmers Day celebrations at Efua Sutherland Children’s Park last year, where hundreds of visitors enjoyed grilled homegrown chicken.
With the backing of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), sponsorship from the World Bank, and coordination by ECOWAS, FSRP continues to strengthen Ghana’s food systems, with poultry production being a key focus area.
The public is encouraged to attend tomorrow’s event around lunchtime, with special offers and surprises promised for early arrivals.
