The West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) has commenced maintenance work on its gas pipeline from Nigeria to Ghana, a process scheduled to run from February 5 to March 2, 2025.
The maintenance involves cleaning the pipeline through a process known as ‘Pigging’ and replacing subsea equipment.
According to a statement from WAPCo, the maintenance will curtail gas supply to thermal plants in Tema as well as restrict gas transportation via reverse flow from Takoradi to Tema.
As a result, thermal plants in Tema will experience gas shortages, leading to potential shutdowns.
To mitigate the impact on power supply, the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, along with other stakeholders, has procured alternative liquid fuel for some generating plants in Tema that have the capacity to operate on such fuel.
This measure is expected to keep some thermal plants operational during the maintenance period.
The Ghana Grid Company Ltd (GRIDCo) and other energy stakeholders have assured the public that they are working diligently to address any potential power supply challenges that may arise during the shutdown.
Stakeholders in the energy sector and the general public are urged to cooperate as the maintenance work progresses.
The statement was jointly issued by the Corporate Communications Section of GRIDCo and the Communications Directorate of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
