The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), in collaboration with the Office of the Vice-President, has officially launched the Tap n’ Go app in Accra.
The digital taxi service aims to provide Ghanaian taxi drivers with a platform similar to established ride-hailing apps like Uber, Yango, and Bolt.
The app, available for download on the Google Play Store, is currently undergoing a pilot phase in selected areas of Accra, including Airport, East Legon, University of Ghana, Circle/Kaneshie, and Dansoman, with plans for a nationwide rollout in the coming year.
The Tap n’ Go app introduces innovative features such as ‘private dropping,’ where private cars operate as taxis, and ‘metered service,’ allowing passengers to instantly stop a taxi, activate a meter, and determine the fare.
Two applications, ‘Tap and Go’ for users and ‘Tap n Go Driver’ for interested taxi drivers, can be downloaded on Google Play Store for Android phones and Apple Store for iPhone users.
Registration for drivers requires a Ghana Card to ensure traceability.
National Chairman of GPRTU, Nana Nimako Bresiamah, expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort with Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The launch follows concerns raised by GPRTU about the impact of foreign taxi apps on Ghanaian taxi drivers’ business.
Nana Bresiamah acknowledged Dr. Bawumia’s support in addressing their challenges and emphasized the app’s importance in revitalizing their business.
The National Chairman cautioned drivers against negative practices and urged the effective and professional use of the app to provide excellent service to Ghanaians.
Many taxi drivers present at the launch expressed satisfaction and commended Vice-President Bawumia for supporting them in saving their businesses.
They appreciated the initiative as a solution to the challenges posed by foreign ride-hailing apps.
The GPRTU executives, including Godfred Abulbire (General Secretary), Emmanuel Nii Ankrah (National Vice-Chairman), Jacob Odae (National First Trustee), Seth Tetteh (Greater Accra Regional Vice Chairman), and Samuel Amoah (Deputy PRO of GPRTU), were present at the launch.
The Tap n’ Go app represents a significant step toward empowering local taxi drivers and enhancing their competitiveness in the digital era.
