President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has highlighted his administration’s significant strides in road infrastructure development, marking the completion and commissioning of the 5.8-kilometer School Junction-Borteyman-Tema Motorway Project in the Greater Accra Region.
During the ceremony, the President emphasized that the project symbolizes the government’s commitment to fostering socio-economic growth through improved infrastructure.
Expanding the national road network
Over the past seven years, the government has added approximately 12,830 kilometers to the national road network, constructing six interchanges and 35 bridges across Ghana. President Akufo-Addo noted that these developments are crucial for “bridging communities, enhancing economic growth, and creating new opportunities for prosperity.”
The newly commissioned School Junction-Borteyman-Tema Motorway Project is a testament to this vision.
Key features of the project
The project, supervised by the Ministry of Roads and Highways and executed by the Ghanaian contractor Messrs. Oswal Investments Limited, includes the construction of a 5.8-kilometer dual carriageway with service lanes, access and slip roads, walkways, and cycling lanes.
Additional features include traffic signals, streetlights, and lay-byes along the route to support public transport.
This road provides vital access to the newly constructed Borteyman Olympic-size Sports Complex and facilitates smoother movement for commuters within the Adentan, Ashaley Botwe, School Junction, Nmai Dzor, Borteyman, and Community 18 areas, linking them directly to the Tema Motorway.
A strategic arterial road
President Akufo-Addo described the project as a significant East-West urban arterial road, serving as a viable alternative to major routes such as the Nsawam-Kwame Nkrumah Avenue/Kojo Thompson Road and Aburi Road-Redemption Road-Independence Avenue.
He reiterated that robust infrastructure is the foundation for sustainable development, with roads acting as the economy’s arteries.
Despite facing challenges, the President affirmed his administration’s commitment to fulfilling its promises to the Ghanaian people.
Enhancing road infrastructure in Greater Accra
In the Greater Accra Region alone, the government has completed over 1,600 kilometers of road projects, including the construction of three interchanges and three bridges, aimed at easing traffic congestion.
President Akufo-Addo justified the significant investments in road infrastructure by explaining that these efforts are designed to alleviate traffic and establish new economic corridors.
Future road development initiatives
Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr. Francis Asenso-Boakye, reassured the public that the government remains dedicated to its mission of providing quality roads as a cornerstone for Ghana’s accelerated socio-economic development.
The government will continue to intensify its work on asphalt overlay projects, road reconstruction, and rehabilitation across the country to ensure safer and more efficient travel for all commuters.
A Foundation for sustainable development
As President Akufo-Addo cuts the ribbon on the School Junction-Borteyman-Tema Motorway Project, he underscores the broader impact of such infrastructure projects on national development.
The government’s commitment to enhancing road infrastructure not only improves connectivity and reduces congestion but also drives economic growth, ultimately contributing to a more prosperous Ghana.
