The National Communications Authority (NCA) has launched the ECOWAS “Free Roaming Initiative,” aimed at reducing the cost of telecommunication services for citizens traveling between Ghana, Benin, and Togo.
This initiative allows people to make and receive calls, send SMS, and access the internet at affordable rates across these three countries.
Affordable communication across borders
Deputy Minister of Communication, Mr. Charles Acheampong, who spoke at the launch in Accra, emphasized the initiative’s potential to deepen ties between the countries.
He noted that the free roaming arrangement would enable “affordable and seamless” communication across borders, allowing citizens to stay connected without the burden of high roaming charges or needing multiple SIM cards.
“By enabling affordable and seamless communication across our borders, we are not only enhancing the convenience of travel and business but also strengthening the social and economic fabric of our nations,” Mr. Acheampong said.
He highlighted that this initiative aligns with ECOWAS’ goals of regional integration and collaboration.
Impact on trade and economy
Beyond its benefits for communication, the initiative is expected to have a positive impact on cross-border trade and economic activities, encouraging increased travel within the ECOWAS sub-region.
Mr. Acheampong also called for the stability and security of telecommunication networks, emphasizing the importance of cybersecurity in protecting citizens’ privacy and data.
Regional collaboration
Dr. Joe Anokye, Director General of the NCA, assured that the authority would monitor the usage of the free roaming service and collect feedback to inform future regulatory decisions.
He praised the collaboration between Ghana, Benin, and Togo, urging other West African countries to join the initiative.
The launch event was attended by various stakeholders, including representatives from telecommunications companies in Ghana, Benin, and Togo.
They expressed excitement about the positive impact the initiative will have on communication, trade, and the general movement of people within the region.
The ECOWAS “Free Roaming Initiative” offers a 30-day or 300-minute free roaming period, as outlined in its specific guidelines, allowing citizens to receive calls without charges while outside their home countries.
