The ongoing chieftaincy conflict in Bawku, Upper East Region, has intensified once more, leading to a tragic loss of life, including that of an 11-year-old girl who was killed inside her home.
In addition, three individuals were fatally shot near the Ghana Highways Authority office on Sunday, October 27.
Since the outbreak of violence on Saturday, October 26, the death toll has continued to rise, with numerous injuries reported. Several of the injured have been transported to Tamale Teaching Hospital for urgent medical attention.
Return of exiled chief sparks renewed tensions
The recent surge in violence follows the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief who had been in exile since his installation in February 2023 in Nalerigu.
After a Kumasi High Court quashed his arrest warrant on October 17, 2024, Abagre returned to Bawku, prompting a resurgence of tensions that had appeared to be simmering down.
His presence has fueled fresh exchanges of gunfire, which erupted on the night of Saturday, October 26, further inflaming the situation.
Curfew imposition
To address the deteriorating security situation, the Ministry of the Interior has implemented a strict curfew in Bawku.
Starting Monday, October 28, 2024, residents are required to observe a daily curfew from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
The decision, made during an emergency National Security Council meeting chaired by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, aims to stem the violence and protect the public amid escalating fears for community safety.
Security forces deployed to restore peace
The Police and Ghana Armed Forces have assured the public of their commitment to restoring peace and security in Bawku and along the Bolgatanga – Walewale – Tamale highway.
In addition to reinforcing military and police presence within Bawku and its surrounding areas, security agencies have set up joint deployment along key routes to secure travel and manage traffic flow.
Authorities urge compliance with curfew
In a statement issued on Monday, the Ministry of the Interior underscored the importance of adhering to the curfew restrictions, emphasizing that Abagre’s return has created substantial risks to public safety.
“The security agencies are dedicated to maintaining law and order in Bawku and nearby areas,” the statement read, further urging residents to cooperate fully with the authorities.
As the chieftaincy dispute continues to disrupt the lives of Bawku’s residents, the government’s response underscores the urgent need to address this deeply rooted conflict in pursuit of long-term peace and stability in the region.
