The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament has strongly condemned what it describes as a surge in post-election violence allegedly orchestrated by members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The Caucus has called for urgent action to curb the unrest and maintain peace and stability in the country.
Violence and intimidation
Addressing the Parliamentary Press Corps in Accra, Deputy Minority Leader Madam Patricia Appiagyei detailed alleged incidents of violence during and after the recent elections.
She claimed that NDC “thugs,” allegedly backed by the party’s leadership, engaged in acts of brutality, intimidation, and destruction in various constituencies.
Electoral Commission offices in Damongo and Tepa were set ablaze, resulting in significant damage.
The Ayensuano District Electoral Office reportedly suffered attacks that led to the destruction of crucial materials.
A vehicle belonging to the NPP Regional Organizer in Nyankpala was damaged, while the Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Madam Ursula Owusu Ekuful, reportedly had her office and residence vandalized.
“These incidents are not isolated but form a worrying pattern of violence that threatens our democratic process,” Madam Appiagyei stated.
Call for justice and security reinforcement
The Minority Caucus urged the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to take swift action to investigate these incidents and bring the perpetrators to justice.
They emphasized the importance of impartiality and vigilance to ensure public safety and the rule of law.
Madam Appiagyei also called on the NDC to prioritize governance over acts of violence and disruption.
“We remind President John Dramani Mahama that his electoral mandate is to formulate policies for the development of the country, not to endorse chaos and lawlessness,” she remarked.
Commitment to peace and dialogue
The NPP Minority Caucus reassured Ghanaians of their commitment to peace and the strengthening of democratic institutions.
Madam Appiagyei stressed the need for dialogue and collaboration to resolve tensions and ensure the nation remains stable.
“The NPP is dedicated to fostering peace and building a resilient democracy. We have put measures in place to support the country’s development and to ensure that such disruptions do not derail our progress,” she added.
A plea for unity
As the nation continues to navigate the aftermath of the elections, the Minority Caucus called on all political actors, civil society groups, and citizens to work together to uphold the values of democracy.
They stressed that Ghana’s stability and development depend on the collective efforts of all stakeholders to ensure peace prevails.
While the allegations against the NDC remain unverified by independent authorities, the ongoing tension underscores the need for decisive action to prevent further violence and promote national unity.
