GHS revives COVID-19 safety protocols amid hMPV concerns

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has intensified surveillance on acute respiratory infections following a surge in cases caused by the Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV), a virus spreading across China and parts of the Northern Hemisphere.
While the outbreak has sparked global attention, the GHS has clarified that this is not a new virus but a seasonal uptick consistent with winter trends in respiratory illnesses.

GHS monitors global developments
In a statement signed by Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director-General of the GHS, the service confirmed that no unusual respiratory pathogens, including hMPV, have been identified in Ghana.
Weekly respiratory samples from all 16 regions have yielded no alarming findings, thanks to ongoing monitoring by the National Influenza Centre (NIC).
The GHS has pledged to continue working closely with partners and following WHO guidelines to monitor developments abroad and remain prepared for any potential challenges.

Preventive measures reinforced
To safeguard public health, the GHS has directed the public to resume adherence to preventive measures reminiscent of COVID-19 protocols. These include:

Proper respiratory hygiene
Covering coughs and sneezes with tissues or elbows.

Hand hygiene
Frequent hand washing with soap and water or using hand sanitisers.

Face masks
Wearing masks in crowded or high-risk areas.

Seeking medical care
Promptly addressing respiratory symptoms with professional healthcare.

Healthy lifestyles
Maintaining balanced diets to strengthen immune systems.

The service emphasised the critical role of these practices in minimising the spread of respiratory infections, including hMPV.

Nationwide preparedness efforts
The GHS has also launched public education campaigns to raise awareness of the virus and its prevention.
Expanded laboratory testing and enhanced surveillance of acute respiratory infections are among the measures in place to ensure timely detection and response to potential outbreaks.

Reassurance for Ghanaians
In its statement, the GHS reassured Ghanaians of its readiness to handle any developments.
“The GHS assures the public that it is taking necessary steps to protect the health of Ghanaians and will provide regular updates on the situation,” the statement concluded.
While hMPV-related infections remain a concern internationally, the proactive steps taken by the GHS reflect a commitment to public health and preparedness.
Citizens are urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with these guidelines to collectively safeguard the nation’s well-being.
