GH₵10,000, jewellery missing after raid on Dr. Addison’s Home

A recent raid by National Security operatives at the residence of former Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, has sparked outrage, with the Minority in Parliament condemning the operation as lawless and abusive.
The raid, which took place in the early hours of Wednesday, resulted in the disappearance of GH₵10,000 and valuable jewellery belonging to Dr. Addison’s wife.
Speaking at a press briefing, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin decried the manner in which security operatives carried out the raid, likening it to a “Rambo-style” operation aimed at intimidating former government officials.
According to Mr. Afenyo-Markin, a team led by one Richard Djakpa, an alleged National Democratic Congress (NDC) activist and self-proclaimed director of operations at National Security, forcibly entered Dr. Addison’s home at Roman Ridge, Accra, under the pretense of searching for a cash vault.
“At the end of their raid, they found nothing. Unfortunately, some GH₵10,000 that was on the governor’s bed was missing. Some of these hungry foot soldiers, parading as National Security operatives, took the opportunity to steal. The governor’s wife’s earrings and necklaces were also not found—in other words, they stole them,” he stated.
This incident has raised serious concerns about the conduct of security operatives and the abuse of power in carrying out politically motivated raids.
The Minority Leader noted that this was not an isolated case, recalling a similar incident at the home of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
The Minority has called on the government to halt these forceful intrusions, which they argue not only violate human rights but also damage Ghana’s democratic credentials and investor confidence.
“These actions undermine democracy and weaken investor confidence. If people investing in your country see these things happening to appointees, it will lead to capital flight. Even Ghanaians will not feel safe, they will withdraw from the financial sector and stop keeping their money in the country,” Mr. Afenyo-Markin warned.
He further urged President Mahama to ensure an end to these forms of security excesses, emphasizing that accountability must be pursued within the bounds of the law.
The Minority reiterated their stance against lawless security operations, emphasizing that Ghana is a nation governed by laws and must uphold due process in all circumstances.
