Bawumia makes hefty donations to Kantamanto market fire victims

Former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has once again shown his commitment to supporting Ghanaians in need by extending aid to traders affected by the devastating fire at the Kantamanto Market.
His recent additional donation of 250 packets of roofing sheets, totaling 5,000 pieces, along with ridge caps, marks a significant step toward helping the traders rebuild their lives and livelihoods.

A timely response to tragedy
The Kantamanto Market fire, which occurred earlier this week, left thousands of traders reeling as their shops, stalls, and investments were reduced to ashes.
In response to this calamity, Dr. Bawumia swiftly visited the scene to assess the damage, offering words of comfort and an initial monetary donation of GH₵200,000 to support the reconstruction efforts.
The Vice-President’s donation of roofing sheets and his promise to personally install CCTV cameras in the market reflect his proactive approach to addressing the traders’ immediate needs while also enhancing long-term security measures.

Symbol of rebuilding and hope
Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, a former Greater Accra Regional Minister, presented the donation of roofing sheets on Dr. Bawumia’s behalf.
The roofing sheets and ridge caps will be instrumental in roofing the market structures currently under reconstruction.
“The Vice-President’s contributions are a beacon of hope for the traders who have been through a traumatic experience,” Mr Glover noted, urging traders to prioritize securing insurance for their businesses to guard against future losses.

The traders’ gratitude
The traders of Kantamanto Market have expressed profound gratitude for Dr. Bawumia’s generosity and empathy.
Mr Yaw Sarpong, the Financial Secretary of the market, highlighted the significance of the Vice President’s repeated visits and support.
“He came here and presented an amount of GH₵200,000 to us, which was very generous. We thought he would not come again, but fortunately, he has returned with 250 packets of iron sheets, which are more than sufficient to roof our structure. We thank him so much,” Mr Sarpong said.

Commitment beyond govt
Even as Dr. Bawumia transitions out of government, his actions underscore his ongoing commitment to the welfare of ordinary Ghanaians.
He emphasized during his visit that he remains dedicated to supporting the market’s recovery, with the promise of CCTV cameras—dubbed “silent police”—to enhance security once reconstruction is complete.

Lessons from the fire
Titus Glover reiterated the importance of disaster preparedness, urging traders to secure insurance coverage for their businesses. “As these infernos have become frequent, it is crucial they secure insurance coverage for their activities here. Security is also paramount,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia’s compassionate intervention, both financial and logistical, has brought much-needed relief to the Kantamanto traders, showcasing leadership rooted in empathy and action.
His support has not only eased the immediate burden of reconstruction but also inspired hope for a more secure and resilient future for the market community.
