Asogli Council apologises to Ken Agyapong, explains rejection

After it has emerged that the Asogli State Council officially invited Mr Kennedy Agyapong, Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin North, the Council has rendered an unqualified apology to the MP.

Mr Stephen Tetteh, Secretary to the Council, apologised for wrongfully inviting Mr Agyapong to the Palace even though the Council Members had opposed the MP’s invitation.

“I accept responsibility for the administrative lapse, which resulted in dispatching an invite to the MP,” he said in a statement dated Monday, September 12, 2022.

Mr Tetteh said Mr Agyapong through his representatives whose name was not mentioned in the statement requested for an invitation to be part of some programme of the 2022 Asogli Te Za.

The letter inviting Mr Agyapong was dated July 25, 2022 and signed by Mr Tetteh.

However, Mr Tertteh now says the request was rejected by the Council.

According to him, the rejection of his request was based on comments Mt Agyapong was quoted to have made in various media reports the person of Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia

He said the five separate comments spanning 2009 to 2018 were deemed uncomplimentary effusions and vitriol attacks on Togbe Afede.

He said the invite to Mr Agyapong inadvertently “slipped” through the many others that were sent across the country and was never a trap to disgrace him.

On Friday, September 10, 2022, leaders of the Asogli Palace denied Mr Agyapong access to Togbe Afede as he sat in state to receive homage from well-wishers.

The MP was there to pay homage to the Chief, who had been receiving representatives of corporate, social, and political organisations while sitting in state at the peak of the Asogli Yam Festival.

Mr Agyepong earlier received a rousing welcome upon entry into the packed grounds and took a seat far across the Agbogbomefia and other chiefs of the State.

However, for what seemed like an hour, cupbearers of the MP were seen engaging with the  chiefs and officials of the Asogli State, as he sat waiting while other dignitaries and patrons appeared before the Chief and offered their gifts.

After a while, the MP’s gifts, which included drinks, were taken out of the Palace grounds by his aides, and he eventually took his leave.

The Agbogbomefia sits in state on the eve of Saturday’s grand durbar to receive well-wishers and their donations in support of the Festival and the Asogli Education Fund.
