A total of 82 house owners in Appiatse, a farming community between Bogoso and Bawdie in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality of the Western Region, have received new homes as part of the ongoing reconstruction efforts following the tragic explosion in January 2022.
The phased handover process is designed to ensure a smooth transition for all beneficiaries, with the entire process scheduled to be completed by next week.
However, some house owners expected to benefit from phase three of the project are demanding that government expedite work on it.
124 Housing units commissioned in Appiatse
A total of 124 housing units have been commissioned in the newly rebuilt Appiatse community.
These units range from one to seven-bedroom houses and are part of a larger development plan that includes a school block with sanitary facilities, inner roads, a market, electricity, water, extensive street lighting, and a green landscape.
Orientation and final handover
To ensure beneficiaries are well-prepared for their new homes, an orientation process has been implemented.
So far, 59 individuals have completed their orientation, received their keys, and are now happily residing in their new homes.
Another 44 individuals are expected to complete their orientation by Monday, August 19, 2024, after which they will receive their keys.
The final group of 21 beneficiaries will begin their orientation next week and will be ready to move into their homes once completed.
In addition to the new housing units, phase two of the Appiatse reconstruction project, which focuses on the repair and rehabilitation of partially impacted buildings, has also been completed.
Payments have been made to 50 affected individuals to carry out the necessary repairs, following professional assessments and valuations of the damaged buildings.
Background: January 2022 tragedy
The reconstruction efforts follow a devastating incident in January 2022, when a vehicle carrying about 10 tonnes of mining explosives to the Chirano Mines collided with a motorcycle, causing a massive explosion that leveled the entire Appiatse community.
The Appiatse Reconstruction Implementation Committee (ARIT), in collaboration with the District Assembly, has worked diligently to rebuild the community and restore normalcy to the lives of those affected by the tragedy.
