Afenyo-Markin accuses NDC of orchestrating election violence

The Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of orchestrating violent incidents across parts of Ghana and falsification of election results in some areas.
Speaking at a press conference held at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) headquarters in Accra, he alleged that the NDC’s actions were part of a deliberate strategy to intimidate NPP members and destroy crucial election documents, including pink sheets.

Claims of harassment and threats
Afenyo-Markin highlighted alarming reports of harassment targeting NPP officials.
He cited an incident involving the parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, Akua Afriye, whose home was allegedly surrounded by a group searching for pink sheets.
“She was forced to flee for her safety, and the police had to intervene,” he stated.
He described this as a coordinated effort by the NDC to destroy evidence that could potentially challenge election results.
“This is not democracy. Why is the NDC so determined to destroy evidence? Why are they targeting pink sheets to set them on fire?” he questioned.

Alleged falsification of election results
The Majority Leader also raised concerns about alleged falsification of election results.
In the Ablekuma Central constituency, he claimed an unauthorised person was called upon to declare results on behalf of the NDC.
Similarly, in Fanteakwa North, he alleged that a presiding officer was surrounded by NDC “machomen” who dictated figures to him in an attempt to falsely declare the NDC as the winner.

EC Office in Damongo set ablaze
In Damongo, NDC supporters reportedly burned down a government building housing the Electoral Commission office.
This act of arson has drawn widespread condemnation and represents one of the most egregious attacks on public institutions in the wake of the elections.

Attack on Communication Minister’s residence
One of the most high-profile incidents involved the office and residence of Communication Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful.
On Sunday, a group of about 15 men invaded her property, stealing cash, a Nissan Hardbody vehicle, a television set, mobile phones, and three new motorbikes.

The invaders also vandalized CCTV cameras and security infrastructure.
The police are investigating the incident, which has raised concerns about the safety of public officials during this period of unrest.

Ayensuano EC office burnt
The Electoral Commission office at Ayensuano in the Eastern Region was burnt.

Call for Intervention from President-Elect Mahama
Afenyo-Markin appealed to President-elect John Dramani Mahama to intervene and put an end to what he described as an organised campaign of intimidation led by NDC members.
He further claimed that some of these individuals had been promised high-ranking government positions in exchange for their actions.
“We call on the President-elect to demonstrate leadership by halting this disturbing trend of violence and intimidation, which threatens our democracy,” Afenyo-Markin urged.

NPP leadership’s call for peace
The Majority Leader reiterated the NPP’s commitment to peace and democracy, while calling on security agencies to investigate the alleged incidents and ensure the safety of all political actors.
In the aftermath of the 2024 elections, Ghana has witnessed a surge in violent attacks, looting, and property destruction, with supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the center of these incidents.
Despite the arrest of 123 individuals in connection with these activities, the unrest continues to escalate, tarnishing the peaceful atmosphere that characterized the election period.
