Adu-Boahene’s legal team issues strong warning to AG

Lawyers for Kwabena Adu-Boahene, the former Director General (DG) of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), and his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng, have condemned Attorney-General (AG) Dr. Dominic Ayine for allegedly using the media to prosecute their clients instead of following due legal process.
According to Samuel Atta Akyea of Zoe, Akyea & Co, the law firm representing Mr. Adu-Boahene, the AG is engaging in a calculated agenda to smear the former NSB boss and his wife in the court of public opinion.
He argued that such tactics are meant to influence public sentiment before the legal process can unfold fairly in court.
“The AG is attempting to frame this matter as propaganda rather than evidence so that, should a court of law dismiss the case for lack of merit, the government can blame the judiciary for bias,” Mr. Atta Akyea said.
The legal team has vowed to pursue justice for Adu-Boahene and his wife and called on the Attorney-General to uphold their rights rather than prejudging the case in the media.

Arrest at Kotoka International Airport
On Thursday, 20 March 2025, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) arrested Mr. Kwabena Adu-Boahene at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) upon his arrival from London on a British Airways flight.

The arrest was executed at approximately 8:30 a.m. in a joint operation involving EOCO investigators, led by Deputy Director Raymond Archer, and officials from the Attorney-General’s Department.
Later, his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng, was also detained by EOCO.
Since their arrest, neither Mr. Adu-Boahene nor his wife has been granted bail or allowed full legal representation, a move that the defense team has described as a blatant violation of their constitutional rights.

Denied access to legal representation
Mr. Atta Akyea expressed shock at EOCO’s refusal to allow him private discussions with his clients.
He stated that he was prevented from speaking confidentially with Mr. Adu-Boahene and his wife unless an EOCO official was present.
“In today’s Ghana, the Attorney-General is fully aware that he has violated our clients’ rights by keeping them in detention beyond the constitutionally mandated 48 hours. He is playing with the bail process, releasing and re-arresting them at will,” the legal team’s statement read.

Responding to claims of flight from justice
The Attorney-General’s public statements have suggested that Adu-Boahene was attempting to flee from justice, a claim his legal representatives have dismissed as false.
According to Mr. Atta Akyea, Adu-Boahene had no reason to evade the authorities.
“Mr. Adu-Boahene is a high-profile public servant with an established business empire. He has no history of criminal activity, nor does his wife,” he added.
The defense team also disputed reports that Adu-Boahene attempted to conceal his travel plans by flying economy class, stating that he traveled in business class—a claim that is easily verifiable.
“If he wanted to escape, he could have used illegal border routes through Togo or Ivory Coast. Instead, he flew into Ghana through Kotoka International Airport and voluntarily presented himself at the airport’s Commercially Important Persons (CIP) lounge,” Mr. Atta Akyea pointed out.
Upon arrival, Adu-Boahene was allegedly lured out of the CIP lounge under the pretense of an immigration issue before being handcuffed and taken into custody.
His wife was arrested the following day when she voluntarily visited EOCO to check on her husband’s well-being.
“A fugitive from justice does not walk into a law enforcement office voluntarily,” the legal team emphasized.

Questioning the AG’s conduct
The defense team has also criticized the Attorney-General’s eagerness to discuss plea bargaining even before taking formal statements from the accused.

“It is alarming that the wealth of Ghanaian citizens with constitutional rights is being openly scrutinized in public discussions even before EOCO establishes any direct link between alleged crimes and their property acquisitions,” Mr. Atta Akyea stated.

Who is Adu-Boahene?
Kwabena Adu-Boahene’s career spans two decades at the National Signals Bureau (NSB), where he held various roles, including Head of Core Network, Planning and IT, and Deputy Director General.
He was promoted to Director General during the last administration due to his technical expertise and experience.
Beyond public service, Adu-Boahene is a successful businessman. He owns Glofert, Ghana’s largest fertilizer blending company, and had amassed considerable wealth before his government appointment.
Contrary to public speculation, he is not the son of Professor Adu Boahen, the NPP’s 1992 presidential candidate.
His defense team has vowed to fight what they describe as an unfair legal and media trial, ensuring that their client receives due process under Ghanaian law.
