A new Oil and Gas Services Terminal in the Port of Takoradi stands as a significant milestone, affirming Ghana’s economic resilience and commitment to infrastructure development.
A $100m vision realized
The project, costing over $100 million ($100,007,246.86), was executed by China Harbour Engineering Company, with GTYD Group Limited serving as consultants.
The extensive works included the reclamation of 20 hectares of sea land, 752,045 cubic meters of dredging, ground improvement, storage yards, concrete roads, water supply systems, sewage networks, power, communication ducts, and a 550-meter-long quay wall with a 10-meter draft.
Spanning an area equivalent to 31 football fields, the terminal includes 200,000 square meters of serviced land designated for oilfield operators, logistics providers, operational offices, workshops, and storage facilities.
This world-class facility integrates offshore supply vessel (OSV) berthing and serviced waterfront land to support oil and gas exploration and production.
A game-changer for Takoradi Port operations
The terminal, constructed by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) with funding from the Government of Ghana, began in October 2022.
It is heralded as a transformative addition to Takoradi Port’s operations.
Inaugurating the project, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo described the terminal as a critical gateway for offshore oil and gas activities, offering a one-stop-shop supply of essential resources.
“This 31-football-park-sized terminal is a bold testament to our nation’s economic progress and positions Ghana as a hub in the upstream oil and gas business,” the President remarked.
Boosting economic opportunities
President Akufo-Addo emphasized the project’s role in enhancing Ghana’s economic competitiveness and fostering regional integration.
“This critical investment affirms our commitment to enhancing economic opportunities for all Ghanaians,” he said.
Stakeholders applaud the project
Transport Minister Kweku Ofori Asiamah expressed gratitude to the President for enabling the Ministry to undertake numerous infrastructure projects.
He highlighted the terminal’s potential to bolster maritime business in the Western Region.
GPHA Director-General Michael Luguje noted that the transformation of Takoradi Port from a traditional export hub to a competitive oil and gas service center has been realized.
The port is now equipped to handle significant cargo volumes and containerized shipments.
Western Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah hailed the project as a landmark achievement in Ghana’s quest for economic growth.
He stressed the importance of safe operations, efficiency, and environmental sustainability as the port continues to expand its capabilities.
