The Eastern Regional Police Command has arrested Alhaji Sofo Azorka over an alleged assault on Alhaji Masawudu Osman, the Third National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), during the Akwatia by-election on September 2, 2025.

In a statement issued on Friday, September 12, 2025, police confirmed Azorka was apprehended in Tamale as part of ongoing investigations into the September 10 incident.

According to the statement, he provided a caution statement before being granted bail.

Azorka is expected to report to the Eastern South Regional Police Command in Kyebi on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., where he will face court.

“The police assures the public of a thorough investigation into the matter, hence entreats all to remain calm as further development shall be communicated,” the statement said.

Earlier, the NPP said it will lodge a formal complaint with the Ghana Police Service against Chief Sofo Azorka, over alleged threats and acts of violence during the by-election.

In a statement signed by its General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP said Sofo Azorka and the Abuakwa North Constituency Communication Officer of the NDC, Alhaji Abdul Wahab Amadu, had issued death threats against some of its senior members.

Those threatened include the Minority Leader, Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, and Frank Annor Dompreh.

The party also accused Azorka and his group of physically attacking its 3rd National Vice Chairman, Alhaji Osman Masawudu.

Azorka is alleged to have said that a by-election would be conducted in Afenyo-Markin’s constituency after the minority paid an unannounced visit by the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, to the NDC party office during the Akwatia by-election.

Azorka accused the NPP of using the by-election as a platform to test undemocratic strategies, warning that the NDC would resist such moves.

He threatened that “A by-election will be held in his [Afenyo-Markin’s] constituency if he tries anything…What does he want here? Is he the NDC secretary? You people should talk to them.”
