Afenyo-Markin supports cholera fight with GH₵100,000

Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has donated GH₵100,000 to the Winneba Municipal Health Directorate to support efforts in combating the recent cholera outbreak in the area.
The donation was presented on February 12, 2025, on behalf of the MP by former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Alhaji Kassim Zubeiru, alongside leaders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and some local chiefs.
Speaking at the event, Alhaji Zubeiru highlighted Afenyo-Markin’s commitment to eradicating the disease from Effutu, despite the MP’s absence from the constituency at the time.
“This morning, we are here with some party executives, chiefs, and people of Atekyedo to make a donation of GH₵100,000 to support the fight against cholera,” he stated.
“The MP is ever ready to support in the fight against the disease although he is not in the constituency now.”

Call for cleanliness and proper sanitation
In addition to the financial support, Alhaji Zubeiru urged residents, particularly those living along the coastline, to adopt better sanitation practices and avoid open defecation, which has been identified as a primary cause of the outbreak.
“We must maintain sanity, cleanliness, and avoid open defecation,” he emphasized.
“The MP has built many toilets in these communities, and I urge residents to use the facilities. This, to a larger extent, will help reduce the spread of the disease.”
He further assured the public that Afenyo-Markin is deeply concerned about the outbreak and is actively collaborating with health authorities to bring the situation under control.

Health directorate expresses gratitude
Officials from the Winneba Municipal Health Directorate expressed their appreciation for the MP’s timely intervention.
They noted that the funds would be used to enhance public health education, provide sanitation facilities, and support medical treatment for affected residents.
The donation comes at a critical time, as health authorities work to contain the spread of cholera in Effutu and surrounding areas.
