Afenyo-Markin mocks “Tot-Tot” ministerial appointments

Mr. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament, has criticized President John Dramani Mahama’s method of announcing ministerial appointments, describing it as “tot-tot” – a piecemeal approach that he believes undermines governance efficiency.
The Minority Leader’s remarks followed the Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin’s announcement of three ministerial nominations by President Mahama. These nominations included Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as Finance Minister-designate, Mr. John Abdulai Jinapor as Energy Minister-designate, and Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine as Attorney General and Minister of Justice-designate.

“24-Hour Economy” Promises Unfulfilled
Mr. Afenyo-Markin expressed concerns that the government’s gradual release of ministerial nominees could delay governance processes and create instability in critical sectors.
He argued that a government claiming readiness to deliver a “24-hour economy” should have a full and comprehensive list of appointments prepared from the outset.
“This ‘tot-tot-tot-tot’ appointment approach is unacceptable,” the Minority Leader stated during parliamentary proceedings.
He further emphasized that an efficient and cohesive government requires clarity and stability in leadership roles across all ministries, urging the President to expedite the nomination process to meet governance expectations.

Call for a comprehensive strategy
The Minority Leader’s comments reflect a broader concern about the impact of staggered appointments on governance and public confidence.
By releasing ministerial nominees in batches, critics argue, the government risks delaying crucial decisions in sectors like finance, energy, and justice, which are pivotal to national development.

President Mahama’s challenge
The criticisms present an early test for President Mahama’s administration, as the country anticipates swift action on key policy priorities.
The vetting process for the three nominees will be closely monitored as the government works to finalize its leadership team and address national challenges.
