Ghana midfielder Abu Francis has successfully undergone surgery in Japan following the serious injury he sustained during Friday’s international friendly against Japan.

The Ghana Football Association confirmed on Sunday, November 16, 2025, that the procedure was completed without complications and that the player has already begun the acute phase of his rehabilitation.

The operation, conducted at Toyota Memorial Hospital, was coordinated through the efforts of Dr Prince Pambo, head of the Black Stars medical team, alongside Toulouse FC medical staff and Japanese surgeons.

The 24-year-old fractured two bones after an awkward twist while attempting to block a shot early in the second half of the match.

He was stretchered off as teammates reacted with concern to the severity of the injury.

According to the GFA, one of its physiotherapists will remain in Japan to support Francis through his intensive physiotherapy sessions during the initial stage of recovery.

Plans are also in place for a GFA official to accompany him back to France once he is discharged.

Francis, who recently joined Toulouse from Cercle Brugge, earned a recall for the November friendlies after missing Ghana’s September and October World Cup qualifiers.

The absence of Abu Francis is expected to be lengthy, given the nature of the injury after the surgery.
