Members of Parliament (MPs) from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) staged a protest march to the Ghana Police Headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, to demand swift action regarding the delayed Ablekuma North election results.

The demonstration shines a spotlight on growing tensions surrounding the 2024 parliamentary elections, particularly what the NPP described as an “unexplained delay” by the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) in declaring the final results for the Ablekuma North Constituency.

According to the protesting NPP MPs, the Electoral Commission (EC) has failed to offer a clear timeline or adequate explanation for the delay, raising concerns about possible electoral irregularities in the key constituency.

Speaking at the Ghana Police Headquarters, Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh Dompreh addressed the media, calling on law enforcement to protect Electoral Commission officials and facilitate the immediate declaration of results.

“The absence of a declared MP for Ablekuma North constitutes a serious violation of the constitutional right to representation guaranteed under the 1992 constitution,” he stated.

The Ablekuma North parliamentary seat has remained unoccupied since the inauguration of the 9th Parliament in January 2025, due to an unresolved dispute following the December 2024 elections.

Both Ewurabena Aubynn of the NDC and Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie of the NPP have publicly claimed victory in the fiercely contested race.

However, the Electoral Commission suspended the collation of results after disturbances erupted at the collation centre and unauthenticated figures surfaced, leading to a prolonged political standoff.

The NPP is urging the Electoral Commission of Ghana to act decisively to restore public trust and ensure that the electoral process in Ablekuma North upholds democratic integrity.

Voting materials for the disputed Ablekuma North constituency election results, especially the parliamentary election were destroyed by fire in the early hours of Tuesday, December 17, 2024.

The voting materials, including ballot boxes and ballot papers kept at a storage facility at the Kwashieman Cluster of Schools in Accra, have been destroyed by a fire outbreak which sources is yet to be identified.

The blaze reportedly began in the school’s library, which had been temporarily converted into a storage area for ballot boxes from the Ablekuma North constituency in the December 7 general elections.
