Aspiring New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Samuel Owusu Amankwaa, has launched a relief donation exercise to support residents affected by the recent floods that caused extensive damage to properties and disrupted livelihoods within the constituency.

The donation, which forms part of his efforts to provide immediate assistance to affected families, included essential relief items aimed at helping residents cope with the aftermath of the disaster and begin the recovery process.

Speaking during the exercise, Amankwaa expressed concern over the scale of destruction caused by the floods, describing the situation as “shocking and heartbreaking” after visiting affected communities and interacting with residents.

He said many families had lost valuable belongings and were facing difficult conditions, stressing the need for urgent interventions to support victims while addressing the long-term causes of flooding in the area.

“After visiting some of these areas and seeing the impact of the floods firsthand, I was deeply touched by the experiences of residents. Families have lost valuable belongings, and many are going through difficult moments. This calls for urgent attention and a collective effort to find lasting solutions,” he said.

Mr Amankwaa noted that while immediate relief was necessary, sustainable measures must be adopted to prevent recurring floods and protect communities from future disasters.

He called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, the Ayawaso West Wuogon Municipal Assembly and other relevant stakeholders to improve drainage infrastructure and implement effective flood prevention measures.

According to him, disaster management should go beyond responding to emergencies after they occur, adding that authorities must identify the underlying causes of flooding and invest in lasting solutions.

“We must move beyond responding only when disasters happen. We need to understand the causes of these challenges, engage the relevant authorities and work together to implement sustainable solutions for our communities,” he said.

The NPP parliamentary hopeful assured residents of his commitment to championing their concerns and engaging the appropriate institutions to address challenges affecting communities within Ayawaso West Wuogon.

He said improving drainage systems, reducing flood risks and protecting residents from future disasters would remain key areas requiring collective action.

Residents who received the relief items expressed appreciation for the gesture and appealed for continued collaboration among stakeholders to find lasting solutions to the flooding challenges affecting parts of the constituency.
