Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has authorised the promotion of 12,802 police officers from January to the first week of February 2026, clearing a decade-long backlog within the Ghana Police Service.
The IGP’s Secretariat confirmed that the exercise affected personnel from the rank of Lance Corporal to Chief Inspector.
It said the promotions were mainly administrative, together with special recommendations undertaken in line with the Police Service Regulations, 2012 (C.I. 76).
The development comes amid allegations of nepotism surrounding the exercise, but the Secretariat dismissed the claims and maintained that due process was strictly followed.
“All unit, district, divisional, and regional commanders across the country’s 25 police regions were directed to submit the names of officers due for promotion,” the Secretariat explained.
Approximately 11,900 junior-rank officers were promoted after remaining in their positions beyond the required four-year period, while about 600 others advanced based on special recommendations.
The Secretariat further indicated that it received numerous petitions from officers who complained of delayed or unfair promotions, including some who had been on interdiction for more than five years but were eventually acquitted and discharged.
After the assessment, the administration approved their promotions.
In addition, petitions from families of officers who died in the line of duty led to posthumous promotions for the fallen personnel.
