The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has congratulated the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on the successful conduct of its presidential primaries, describing the process as peaceful and a positive contribution to Ghana’s democratic growth.

In a statement issued in Accra on Sunday, February 1, 2026, and signed by the NDC’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu-Nketiah, the party applauded the opposition NPP for organising what it termed a violence-free contest that culminated in the election of former Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, as the party’s flagbearer for the December 2028 presidential election.

“The National Democratic Congress hereby offers its congratulations to the opposition New Patriotic Party for the successful organisation of a violence-free presidential candidate primaries that saw former Vice-President Dr Bawumia emerge as the party’s candidate for the presidential election slated for December 2028,” the statement said.

The NDC also singled out the Ghana Police Service for commendation, praising what it described as “remarkable and efficient” security arrangements that ensured the smooth and orderly conduct of the primaries across the country.

According to the statement, the peaceful nature of the exercise underscores the importance of cooperation among political parties and state institutions in safeguarding Ghana’s democratic credentials.

The party noted that such collaboration remains critical as the country continues to deepen its democratic culture ahead of future national elections.

The opposition party further welcomed the broader participation of the NPP and other political parties in efforts aimed at strengthening Ghana’s multiparty democracy, stressing that competitive but peaceful elections are essential to maintaining public confidence in the electoral process.

Additionally, the NDC acknowledged the concession statements issued by candidates who were unsuccessful in the primaries, describing them as conciliatory and statesmanlike.

The party expressed hope that the tone of unity struck in those statements would be reflected in subsequent actions.

“We have also taken note of the reconciliatory concession statements from the other unsuccessful candidates, and hope that they will walk their talk,” the statement added.

The NDC’s message comes at a time when political parties are increasingly being urged to prioritise peace, tolerance and respect for democratic norms as Ghana prepares for another round of high-stakes elections in the coming years.
