The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced December 19, 2026, as the date for its National Congress to elect a new National Executive Committee, marking a major milestone in the party’s reorganisation process.
The decision, which aligns with provisions in the party’s constitution, was disclosed by the General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, at a press briefing at the NDC’s headquarters in Accra on Thursday, January 29.
Kwetey said the reorganisation programme will include measures to protect the integrity of the party’s voter register and ensure a smooth and credible internal electoral process.
“The main congress to elect all the national executives of the NDC, in this very important year of our reorganisation, will take place on Saturday, December 19, 2026,” he announced.
As part of the reforms, the party has directed all public office holders appointed by the President who intend to contest for party positions to resign at least six clear months before filing their nomination forms.
“Any person seeking to contest for a party position who currently holds an office to which he or she was appointed by the President or government must resign from that office at least six clear months before filing nomination forms,” Kwetey stated.
He further announced that the party’s regional elections to choose new regional executives will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2026, with processes expected to conclude by Sunday, November 16, 2026.
According to him, the electoral process will follow the established sequence, beginning with the picking of nomination forms, vetting of aspirants, the filing of appeals, and campaign activities ahead of the polls.
Before the regional elections, the party will also organise regional youth and women’s conferences to elect regional youth leaders.
“By the close of Sunday, November 16, the party will be in a position to have all our regional executives in place,” he said.
Kwetey disclosed that nominations for the regional elections will open from Tuesday, October 6, to Wednesday, October 7, 2026. Filing of nomination forms will take place from Wednesday, October 14, to Thursday, October 15, followed by vetting on Friday, October 16, and Saturday, October 17. Appeals will be heard on Sunday, October 18, and Monday, October 19.
In a related development, the NDC has formally barred serving government appointees from contesting for executive positions within the party unless they resign from their appointments in line with the six-month requirement.
The General Secretary explained that the restriction applies to ministers and deputy ministers, chief executive officers and their deputies, as well as metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives.
However, he clarified that persons appointed as board chairpersons or board members are exempt from the directive.
The NDC said the measures are intended to strengthen internal democracy and provide clear guidelines as the party begins its nationwide reorganisation exercise on January 30.
