A devastating fire outbreak has destroyed more than 100 vehicles after sweeping through a cluster of mechanic shops at Sofoline in Kumasi, leaving artisans counting heavy losses and raising fresh concerns about fire safety in industrial areas.
The fire, which reportedly broke out in the late hours of the night, spread rapidly through the mechanic enclave, fueled by flammable materials such as fuel, oils, tyres, and spare parts commonly found at the shops. Within a short time, dozens of vehicles under repair were completely burnt beyond recognition.
Eyewitnesses said mechanics and residents made frantic attempts to salvage vehicles and equipment, but the intensity of the flames made it impossible. Thick smoke and intense heat forced many to flee the area as the fire raged.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) were later deployed to the scene and managed to bring the fire under control after several hours of firefighting.
However, by the time the blaze was extinguished, extensive damage had already been done.
Although no deaths were reported, several mechanics suffered minor injuries while trying to rescue their property.
Many affected artisans described the incident as a major setback, noting that some of the destroyed vehicles belonged to customers and served as their primary source of livelihood.
The cause of the fire is yet to be officially determined, but preliminary accounts suggest it may have been triggered by an electrical fault or improper handling of flammable substances. Investigations have been launched to establish the exact cause.
