MTN Ghana once again turned Christmas into a moment of shared humanity, compassion and hope as it welcomed 700 babies born on December 25 with specially prepared baby hampers across 30 hospitals in all 16 regions of the country.

For the 14th consecutive year, the MTN Ghana Foundation marked the birth of Christ by celebrating new life, standing shoulder to shoulder with mothers who delivered on Christmas Day and reminding them that they are not alone in the critical early days of motherhood.

What began more than a decade ago as a simple gesture of goodwill has grown into one of Ghana’s most cherished corporate traditions.

Each Christmas, MTN chooses to honour the miracle of birth with practical support, warmth and reassurance, touching families at one of the most vulnerable yet joyful moments of their lives.

Celebrating Christmas through new life

The Christmas Baby Hamper initiative reflects MTN’s belief that the true spirit of the season lies not only in celebration but in sharing.

Carefully packed with essential baby care items including diapers, wipes, detergents, feeding bowls, breastfeeding bottles, comforters and other baby cosmetics, each hamper represents far more than material support.

It is a message of welcome to every newborn, a reassurance to every mother and a powerful reminder that compassion remains at the heart of community.

In celebrating the birth of Christ, MTN deliberately chose to celebrate life, hope and humanity, reinforcing the idea that corporate success finds its greatest meaning when it uplifts society.

Fourteen years on, the initiative has become a legacy of kindness, demonstrating how sustained corporate compassion can evolve into tradition and leave a lasting imprint on communities nationwide.

Korle Bu: Strengthening a longstanding partnership

At the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, the MTN Ghana Foundation donated 150 baby hampers to mothers who delivered during the Christmas season.

The presentation formed part of the company’s annual Boxing Day outreach programme, a nationwide festive initiative aimed at supporting families while appreciating customers and stakeholders.

Speaking during the presentation ceremony, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer of MTN Ghana, Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, said the gesture reflected MTN’s enduring commitment to social responsibility, particularly during moments that matter most to families.

She explained that Boxing Day provided a meaningful opportunity to reach out to new mothers who may struggle to access essential baby items during the critical early days after delivery.

According to her, MTN’s support was designed to ease that burden and put smiles on the faces of mothers welcoming new life during the festive season.

“At MTN, giving back is part of who we are. Today, we are here to celebrate and support mothers who delivered during this Christmas period, to put smiles on their faces and to express our gratitude to our customers and stakeholders for their continued trust and support,” she said.

Ms. Wiafe disclosed that 150 of the 700 hampers were allocated to Korle Bu, reaffirming the Foundation’s strong and enduring partnership with Ghana’s premier referral hospital.

She also used the occasion to caution the public against mobile money fraud during the festive season, urging customers never to share their MoMo PINs and to report suspicious calls through official MTN channels.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the hospital, Head of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, Dr. Charles Takyi, expressed profound appreciation for MTN’s consistent support over the years.

He recalled several interventions by the company, including the renovation of the maternity second floor, describing MTN as a strong backbone to the department.

Dr. Takyi also highlighted pressing challenges such as infrastructure gaps, the need for modern medical equipment and improved logistics to enhance maternal and neonatal healthcare delivery.

He appealed to corporate bodies and development partners to support ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare services, while assuring the public of the hospital’s commitment to quality care in the year ahead.

Kumasi: Compassion at KATH and Pampaso

In Kumasi, as carols echoed through the city and families gathered to celebrate Christmas, MTN Ghana brought the true meaning of the season to life at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and the Children’s Hospital at Pampaso.

There, the joy of newborn cries was matched with the warmth of carefully prepared baby hampers, symbolising care, love and community support.

MTN Area Sales Manager for Ashanti, Ahafo, Bono and Bono East Regions, Mr. Obed Adu-Amankwaah, described Christmas as more than merrymaking, noting that it was a season defined by kindness, generosity and love.

He said these were values MTN held close to its heart, adding that supporting mothers and newborns during Christmas was a powerful way of living out those principles in practical terms.

Koforidua-Eastern Region

In the Eastern Region, MTN Ghana extended its Christmas tradition to several hospitals in Koforidua, distributing baby hampers as part of a nationwide exercise that has endured for 14 years.

Team Lead and Territory Sales Controller for MTN Ghana in Koforidua, Mr. Ebenezer Okaikoi Tetteh, explained that the Foundation distributed 40 hampers across the Eastern Region.

The outreach covered facilities including Koforidua Central Hospital, Koforidua Polyclinic, SDA Hospital Clinic, St. Joseph Hospital and the Dwenase CHPS Compound.

“The impact has been very great. Some mothers come without basic needs for delivery. This support has enhanced their lives and put smiles on their faces,” Mr. Okaikoi Tetteh said.

At St. Joseph Hospital, Midwifery Officer Anastasia Osei Mensah, who was shift in charge of the maternity ward, expressed gratitude for the gesture, noting that all nine babies delivered at the time received hampers.

She observed that many mothers struggle to acquire basic delivery items or settle hospital bills, making the support timely and invaluable.

She also used the occasion to encourage greater male involvement in maternal care, urging men to accompany their spouses during antenatal visits, save towards delivery and actively support the childbirth journey.

One beneficiary, Ms. Florence Juliana Ahiataku, described the donation as a blessing and a surprise that would significantly reduce the cost of caring for her newborn. She prayed for MTN Ghana to sustain the initiative so that more families could benefit in the years ahead.

Tamale-Northern Region

In the Northern Region, MTN Ghana presented 30 baby hampers to Christmas Day babies at the Tamale Teaching Hospital and the Tamale West Hospital.

At the Teaching Hospital alone, 16 babies were delivered, including twin births, while the Tamale West Hospital recorded 11 deliveries.

Mr. Mohammed Shayawu, who represented MTN Ghana’s leadership in the region, said the gesture aligned with the company’s long-standing tradition of honouring babies born on Christmas Day.

He explained that MTN’s ability to sustain such initiatives was made possible by the continued patronage of its customers.

Senior Midwife at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Madam Fauzia Adam, said the donation brought joy to both mothers and health workers while strengthening collaboration between the hospital and MTN Ghana.

She added that beyond baby hampers, MTN’s support also contributed to hospital operations through improved communication for referrals and coordination.

At the Tamale West Hospital, Senior Midwife and Night Shift In-charge, Madam Rahama Yakubu, said the support brought relief to mothers with limited resources and eased pressure on staff amid space constraints at the facility.

Beneficiary mother, Mohammed Musharifa, described the gesture as unexpected and timely, noting that it gave her confidence during the early days of caring for her newborn.

Sunyani-Bono Region

In the Bono Region, MTN Ghana presented 30 Christmas baby hampers to mothers at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital and the Berekum Holy Family Catholic Hospital. The Sunyani Teaching Hospital received 20 hampers, while 10 were allocated to Berekum.

Bono Regional Manager of MTN Ghana, Mr. Kofi Owusu, said the gesture formed part of the company’s corporate social responsibility programme, aimed at supporting mothers and ensuring healthy beginnings for newborns.

He also announced MTN’s readiness to establish Mobile Money collection points at the two hospitals to facilitate convenient payment of hospital bills, calling for cooperation from hospital management to make the initiative successful.

Director in charge of Nursing and Midwifery at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital, Mrs. Eunice Oppong-Amoah, commended MTN for the kindness and appealed for further support, including smartphones and airtime for nurses and midwives.

Bolgatanga / Navrongo – Upper East Region

At the Upper East Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga and the War Memorial Hospital in Navrongo, 28 hampers were presented to beneficiary mothers.

The donation was warmly received by health authorities at the Upper East Regional Hospital, with Senior Midwifery Officer Madam Anisa Abdulai expressing deep appreciation on behalf of the hospital and maternity ward.

She noted that MTN’s intervention had become a reliable annual tradition, bringing relief and joy to mothers during one of the most delicate moments of their lives. According to her, the consistency of the gesture demonstrated MTN’s genuine care for communities beyond business.

Madam Abdulai described the hampers as comprehensive and timely, explaining that they contained complete sets of essential baby items that met the immediate needs of both mothers and newborns.

She said the packages removed the stress of having to purchase additional items after delivery, adding that the mothers were visibly delighted and grateful for the support.

She offered prayers for MTN Ghana’s continued growth and encouraged the public to keep patronising the network.

Beneficiary mothers also expressed heartfelt gratitude, describing the support as thoughtful and impactful. Madam Sophia Atia, who delivered twin babies, thanked MTN Ghana for the gesture and pledged her loyalty to the network.

Another beneficiary, Madam Monica Tubila, said the hampers contained almost everything needed for newborn care, noting that the donation had significantly eased her burden and strengthened her appreciation for MTN’s role in supporting families at critical life moments.

Cape Coast – Central Region

In the Central Region, MTN Ghana welcomed 25 babies born on Christmas Day at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital with specially prepared hampers.

Speaking at the presentation, Manager of Human Resources for the Western and Central Regions, Madam Regina Arkaifie, said the gesture was rooted in MTN’s belief in love-sharing and community impact.

She explained that the hampers, which included diapers, baby oil, pomade and other essentials, were designed to support mothers in the critical early days after childbirth. She noted that over the years, the initiative had consistently brought excitement and relief to mothers across the region.

Madam Arkaifie reaffirmed MTN Ghana’s commitment to strengthening its corporate social responsibility efforts, particularly in education, economic empowerment and health. She also assured customers of improved service delivery in the coming year, with special focus on data services, including the expansion of fibre-to-home connectivity to enhance digital access across communities.

Health professionals at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital welcomed the intervention, with Deputy Chief Nursing Officer Madam Veronica Koomson thanking MTN for its consistency in supporting Christmas Day mothers.

She observed that many women arrived at the hospital without basic delivery items, often placing additional strain on nurses.

Beneficiary mothers, including Madam Salamatu Nuhu and Madam Vida Obosu, described the donation as a blessing that would ease the early days of motherhood, while midwives appealed for continued support to improve equipment and working conditions at the facility.

A legacy of compassion

Across Ghana, mothers who received the hampers expressed heartfelt gratitude, describing the support as timely, impactful and deeply meaningful.

For many, the items eased the financial burden of childbirth and brought comfort at a moment when help was most needed.

Fourteen years after its inception, MTN’s Christmas Baby Hamper initiative remains a shining example of corporate compassion in action.

It stands as proof that when businesses genuinely bond with communities, kindness becomes tradition, giving becomes a legacy, and Christmas becomes a celebration not just of faith, but of life itself.
