A Kia truck loaded with rubber crashed into three shops at Nkroful Junction, opposite Allied Filling Station in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis of the Western Region, on December 27, leaving one person dead and others injured.

The truck, traveling from Agona Nkwanta along the Kansaworado Highway towards Accra, reportedly lost control after another Kia truck ahead suddenly swerved into its lane at Nkroful Junction.

In an effort to avoid a collision, the rubber-laden truck veered off the road and collided with the shops.

Two people were trapped inside one of the buildings. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other sustained injuries and was rushed to Fijai Hospital for treatment.

Abraham Yalley, the area’s assemblyman, narrated the on Takoradi-based Connect FM.

He said “I received a call about the accident and immediately came to the scene. One person has been taken to Fijai Hospital, while the other, unfortunately, died. She was in the shop preparing porridge. She is an SHS 1 student at Adiembra SHS and had been helping out at the shop to support her education.”

The police have taken the deceased to the mortuary, and investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.

In the first eleven months of 2025, Ghana witnessed a worrying increase in road traffic fatalities with the total number of deaths rising by 18.5% to 2,673 compared to 2,256 in the same period of 2024.

Data compiled by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service and analysed by the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) showed that the fatalities overwhelmingly involved men, with 2,139 males (80%) losing their lives, compared to 534 females (20%).

This represents a ratio of one female death to four male deaths, a trend consistent with previous years and highlighting the higher exposure of males to road traffic incidents.

Adults above the age of 18 accounted for 2,377 deaths (89%), while 296 children below 18 years (11%) were killed. This translates into a 7:1 adult-to-child fatality ratio, illustrating the greater risk adults face due to increased exposure on the roads.

Motorcycle crashes alone accounted for 1,239 deaths, making them the single deadliest mode of transport in road traffic incidents.
