Parliament has ratified a landmark labour mobility agreement between the Government of Ghana and the State of Qatar aimed at safeguarding the rights and welfare of Ghanaian workers employed in the Gulf nation.
The agreement, which covers professionals in the health, information technology, catering, tourism, and engineering sectors, is expected to end discrimination and human rights abuses suffered by Ghanaian workers in Qatar.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, said the Qatari government had already ratified the pact and was awaiting Ghana to fulfill its side of the arrangement.
Mr Ablakwa explained that the agreement would provide a structured framework for labour migration, ensuring that Ghanaian workers in Qatar enjoy fair treatment, decent working conditions, and equal opportunities.
He emphasised that the ratification was a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations between Ghana and Qatar, while also addressing long-standing concerns about the exploitation of migrant workers in the Gulf region.
The Minister assured Parliament that mechanisms would be put in place to monitor the implementation of the agreement and to provide support for Ghanaian workers abroad.
The ratification marks a new chapter in Ghana’s labour diplomacy, offering hope to thousands of skilled professionals seeking opportunities in Qatar under improved conditions.
