The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has called for renewed commitment, practical reforms, and collective action within the international diamond certification framework as he addressed delegates at the Kimberley Process (KP) Ministerial Meeting held in Dubai.

Speaking on behalf of the Republic of Ghana, the CEO expressed gratitude to the United Arab Emirates for hosting the gathering, describing the forum as crucial to safeguarding the integrity of the global diamond trade.

He praised the Kimberley Process as a historic achievement that has, for more than two decades, helped prevent diamonds from fueling war, violence, and human suffering.

However, he cautioned that the nature of conflict had significantly evolved. While many diamond-producing regions may no longer face armed insurgencies, they continue to experience exploitation, exclusion, and economic marginalisation.

“Conflict is no longer confined to rebel armies in the bush,” he stated. “Communities may not hear gunfire, but they feel the violence of dispossession and neglect.”

He lamented the slow pace of reforms in the diamond industry, emphasising that delaying action undermines the moral foundations of the Kimberley Process.

He urged member states to embrace realistic and incremental reforms that protect vulnerable communities while maintaining legitimate trade.

Addressing ongoing discussions surrounding the definition of “conflict diamonds,” he acknowledged that competing proposals reflected genuine concerns and priorities of various participants. He stressed, however, that consensus must not lead to gridlock.

“Consensus is at the heart of the KP, but it must be a path to progress—not paralysis,” he remarked.

The CEO called on participants to focus on areas of convergence, listen to dissenting voices, and seek practical solutions grounded in shared responsibility. He encouraged member states not to allow the pursuit of perfection to hinder meaningful change.

“Let history record that this meeting chose renewal over stagnation,” he declared. “Ghana stands ready to walk this path of reform with you.”

The address concluded with Ghana reaffirming its commitment to the Kimberley Process and its readiness to collaborate with all stakeholders to strengthen the credibility and relevance of the global diamond certification regime.
