Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has dismissed claims that the Ghana Police Service has denied its officers access to healthcare.

His remarks follow a video circulating on social media in which a police officer with a swollen leg alleged that the Service had neglected him, after being involved in an accident at Asante Mampong.

Addressing journalists in Accra, the IGP clarified that the said officer received medical attention at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and was later transferred to the Police Hospital in Accra.

He said doctors at the Police Hospital recommended that the officer’s leg be amputated below the knee to save his life.

However, the officer and his family objected to the procedure, opting instead to seek treatment elsewhere, a decision the doctors respected.

“The foot got worse, and he later decided to publish his condition in the media,” the IGP said.

“The Ghana Police Service has never denied any officer access to health.”

Mr Yohuno explained that the matter only came to his attention after the video surfaced online, adding that the Police Administration was making efforts to locate the officer and engage him and his family on the way forward.

He reiterated that the Police Service remained committed to the welfare of all officers, including access to quality healthcare.
