A tragic road accident has occurred at Asikuma Junction in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region, resulting in the deaths of five people and leaving four others injured.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the accident took place after a tipper truck with registration number GT 725-19 collided with a grey Toyota Noah bearing registration GX 422-25 at the Asikuma Junction.

In total, there were nine casualties. Four survivors—including a minor—were rescued and transported to the National Ambulance Service and then – to the Peki Government Hospital.

The remaining five victims were found unresponsive and have since been handed over to the police for further investigation.

The response team from the Peki Fire Station, led by AstnO Fred Aganu and Acting District Officer Godwin Gbedemah, quickly mobilised to the scene following the emergency call.

Accident Asikuma JunctionThis tragic incident occurred amid a worrying trend in road‐traffic fatalities across the country. Between January and June 2025 alone, provisional data from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) show that Ghana recorded 7,289 road crashes and 1,504 deaths during that interval.

On average, this translates into multiple lives lost each day through road accidents.

Typical factors in this kind of accident may include:

  • Speeding or loss of control (particularly by heavy vehicles such as tipper trucks)

  • Poor vehicle maintenance or mechanical failure

  • Driving fatigue or impairment

  • Road condition, visibility or signage issues

  • Overloading in the case of passenger cars
