An officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has been killed and another critically injured following a suspected armed attack at Nangani in the Tempane District of the Upper East Region on Sunday night.

The attack, which occurred at about 10:30 am, was carried out by unidentified gunmen.

Security sources told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the two officers were returning from a night duty on a motorbike when they were ambushed near the Nangani checkpoint and fired at by the assailants.

One of the officers sustained a broken leg, while the other died from the gunshot wounds despite efforts to save his life.

The motive for the attack remains unclear.

Mr Joseph Mbilla, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Tempane, had confirmed the Immigration officer’s incident and described it as “barbaric and unfortunate.”

He said security agencies had begun full-scale investigations to apprehend the perpetrators and that he had engaged the military command for the immediate deployment of additional personnel to bolster security in Nangani and other border communities.

“I have engaged the military to support the Immigration Service and the Police to reinforce patrols and protect our officers in the line of duty,” Mr Mbilla said.

The attack has heightened fears among residents over the growing wave of gun-related violence.

Residents have appealed for enhanced surveillance and regular joint patrols to safeguard both security personnel and civilians in border communities.
