The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced a temporary shutdown of the Teshie-Nungua Desalination Plant, citing unresolved contractual challenges and the prolonged lack of critical maintenance as the main reasons behind the closure.

In a statement issued in Accra, GWL said the decision was necessary to address long-standing operational concerns that have affected the plant’s efficiency and safety.

The desalination facility, located along the eastern coastal corridor of Accra, has for years served as a key source of potable water for residents and businesses in Teshie, Nungua, Spintex, La, Sakumono, and adjoining communities.

According to the utility company, interim measures have been implemented to minimise the impact of the shutdown on affected areas.

These include the rerouting of water from alternative treatment plants and prioritising essential service facilities such as hospitals, schools, and health centres.

“GWL remains committed to delivering safe, reliable, and continuous water supply services to our cherished customers,” the statement said.

“We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused and assure the public that engagements are ongoing to expedite the resolution of the matter and restore normal operations.”

The company further assured residents that regular updates on progress and timelines for restoration will be communicated through its official website, social media platforms, and community engagement representatives.

The Teshie-Nungua Desalination Plant, commissioned in 2015, was built to augment water supply to Accra’s rapidly growing eastern corridor but has faced intermittent operational challenges over the years due to technical and contractual disputes.
