Former Vice President and flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has revealed that the mobile money interoperability initiative under his tenure has created more than 900,000 jobs across Ghana since its introduction.

Speaking in Dormaa in the Bono Region as part of his nationwide campaign tour ahead of the NPP presidential primaries in January 2026, Dr Bawumia said the move to make mobile money platforms interoperable has not only deepened financial inclusion but also spurred significant job creation in both urban and rural communities.

According to him, unemployment remains one of the major challenges confronting Ghana’s youth, and he emphasised that only leaders with transformative ideas can create sustainable employment opportunities.

Bawumia indicated that “Ideas build nations and ideas create jobs… Ghana is the fastest-growing mobile money market in Africa. Before mobile money interoperability, there were only eight million mobile money subscribers in Ghana, but now it is about 24 million, which has significantly boosted the mobile money industry and created a lot of jobs.”

“Through just one of my ideas, mobile money interoperability alone has registered over 900,000 mobile money vendors, thus creating tens of thousands of sustainable jobs for the youth of our country,” he added.

He explained that the interoperability system—launched in 2018 under the government’s digital transformation agenda—has allowed seamless transactions between bank accounts, mobile money wallets, and e-zwich cards.

This has facilitated business operations, expanded the mobile money ecosystem, and empowered thousands of agents and vendors across the nation.

Dr Bawumia noted that digital financial services remain central to the government’s vision of building a robust and inclusive economy driven by technology.

He also highlighted that Ghana continues to be a leader in digital innovation within the sub-region, citing initiatives such as the Ghana Card, Digital Address System, and e-levy platform integration.

Bawumia reaffirmed his commitment to deepening digital reforms, adding that innovations in fintech and digital payments would continue to create opportunities for the youth.

He urged NPP delegates to assess leadership based on ideas and competence rather than wealth.

“Just one idea I proposed has created tens of thousands of jobs. So this tells you that being a great leader and building a country and creating jobs is not about how much money you have in your pocket. It is about your ideas, and I have shown through my service as Vice President that I have great ideas to transform the country if given the chance as President,” he stated.
