Medeama Sporting Club climbed to second place on the Ghana Premier League table after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Nations FC at the TNA Stadium on Sunday.

The Yellow and Mauves secured their third win in four matches thanks to goals from Emmanuel Owusu and substitute Abdul Salam, as Ibrahim Tanko’s men continued their impressive start to the campaign.

Owusu gave Medeama the perfect start when he fired home in the 12th minute to put the hosts in control. But Nations FC responded after the break, with Emmanuel Annor finding the equaliser just six minutes into the second half to set up a tense finale.

With the match seemingly heading for a draw, Salam rose to the occasion in the 82nd minute, coming off the bench to strike the decisive goal that sealed all three points for Medeama.

The victory moves Tanko’s side within touching distance of the top, just one point behind league leaders Heart of Lions, who were held to a goalless draw by Asante Kotoko in Kumasi.

Medeama’s strong start to the season has underlined their intent to mount another serious title challenge, as they continue to build momentum early in the campaign.

This victory lifted Medeama to second place, one point behind league leaders Heart of Lions, following their previous defeat to Karela United.

The match saw Nations FC manage 53% possession and register five shots on target, but Medeama created more danger from set-pieces, earning nine corners compared to Nations FC’s eight.
