Police bust gang behind rural bank robberies across Ghana

Police dismantle syndicate linked to series of rural bank heists in Ghana

The Ghana Police Service has dismantled a gang responsible for a series of robberies targeting financial institutions, particularly rural banks, across several regions of Ghana, including the Ashanti, Eastern, Central, Western, and Ahafo Regions.

So far, ten (10) suspects have been arrested, while three (3) were killed during an exchange of gunfire with the Police. A manhunt is underway to apprehend the remaining suspects still at large. The suspects are: Akwesi Agyei (Cobra), Ibrahim Alhassan, Samuel Appiah (Akwesi Mugu), Francis Acquah (Preman), David Obuobi (Wasty), Martin Akansina (One Billion), Nana Yaw Frimpong (Mystical), Kojo Atingawo (Borga), Samuel Akwasi Gyan, Stephen Sey, Kwaku Peprah (X5; deceased), Boozin (deceased), Kwabena Owusu Ansah (at large), and Albert (at large).

The operation also led to the recovery of the following exhibits:

  • Three (3) AK-47 assault rifles

  • One (1) single-barreled gun with one AAA round of ammunition

  • Seven (7) pump-action guns and 96 rounds of AAA ammunition

  • Three (3) Bruni pistols with 40 rounds of ammunition

  • One (1) M&P pistol with 4 rounds of ammunition

  • Cash amounting to GH¢18,845.00, US$104, 190 Liberian Dollars, ₦5,800, CFA31,000, and assorted GH¢ coins

  • Six (6) vehicles

  • Four (4) motorbikes

  • Assorted mobile phones and jewellery

The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, commended all police officers and members of the public whose support and credible information contributed to the success of the operation.

In recognition of the significant roles played by some officers, the IGP has promoted twelve (12) of them. The promotions include three (3) Chief Inspectors granted direct entry to the Police Academy to be commissioned into the senior officer corps of the Service; three (3) Inspectors promoted to the rank of Chief Inspector; two (2) Sergeants promoted to the rank of Inspector; one (1) Corporal promoted to the rank of Sergeant; and three (3) Constables promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal.

The Ghana Police Service once again assures the public of its commitment to pursuing all remaining suspects and sustaining efforts aimed at protecting lives and property across the country.
