Professor Alidu Seidu Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been declared the winner of the Tamale Central by-election by the Electoral Commission (EC), after running unopposed.

Constituency Returning Officer Muniru Musah, citing Constitutional Instrument (CI) 127, said the law allows the EC to declare an unopposed candidate elected.

“As it stands, only Prof. Alidu Seidu Mahama stands nominated, and according to CI 127, he shall be declared elected,” Musah of the EC stated in Tamale Central constituency.

NDC primaries

Prof. Alidu Mahama Seidu was elected as the NDC parliamentary candidate.

He secured eight hundred and forty votes (840) out of a total of 1,476 votes cast in the keenly contested internal primary held at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale on Saturday, September 6, 2025.

His closest contender, a former Chief Executive of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, Lawyer Hanan Gundadow Abdul Rahaman, obtained five hundred and thirty-six (536) votes.

The political science lecturer turned politician will now contest the September 30 by-election in an attempt to succeed the late NDC Member of Parliament, who was also the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Murtala, who died in a tragic helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, together with other government officials.

Meanwhile, 12 aspirants, including three women, contested the primary for the opportunity to represent the NDC in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

However, the landslide victory of Prof. Seidu did not come as a surprise, given that he was one of the two frontrunners in the race.
