The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has cautioned party members and sympathisers against engaging in premature discussions about who should succeed President John Dramani Mahama as the party’s flagbearer ahead of the 2028 presidential elections.

Speaking in an interview, Nketia emphasised that the NDC is currently focused on consolidating its base, strengthening party structures, and preparing for the 2028 general elections, rather than debating future leadership transitions.

According to him, conversations about who takes over from Mahama are not only untimely but also risk distracting the party from its immediate priorities.

“If you campaign to replace President John Dramani Mahama when the government has not even attained a year in office and for that achieve its goals, then we are not serious as a political party,” Asiedu Nketia stated.

He called on party members to remain united and offer their full support to President John Dramani Mahama as he continues to deliver on the party’s promises to Ghanaians.

Addressing party members during his thank you tour at Abotakyi in the Akuapem North Constituency of the Eastern Region on Thursday, September 18, 2025, he urged members to put aside personal interests and internal disagreements for the greater good of the party and the country.

“In what way can we ensure the party is not put to shame? We will be ashamed if we are unable to fulfill our promises… Fortunately, we have a good president who has already begun delivering on those promises,” he said.

The NDC chairman further explained that leadership contests at the wrong time could undermine the party’s unity, which is critical as it positions itself as the alternative government.

He urged party members to exercise patience and remain committed to the NDC’s agenda.

Nketia’s comments come at a time when pockets of debate have begun to surface within the party regarding potential successors to John Mahama, who has already declared that the 2024 elections would be his last bid for the presidency.

The NDC leadership has, therefore, reiterated its call for members to put the party first and avoid actions that could derail its collective goals.
