Reports indicated that he allegedly shot himself with his service weapon, though the circumstances leading to the incident remain unclear.

The Ghana Police Service has not yet released an official statement on the matter. However, investigations have been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.

Residents of Duayaw Nkwanta have expressed shock at the incident, describing the officer as a calm and dedicated individual.

Some community members and colleagues have called for increased attention to the mental health and welfare of officers within the service.

The body of the deceased has been conveyed to the Saint John of God hospital at Duayaw Nkwanta for preservation and autopsy, pending further investigations by the police.

The police officer, some residents said, married a nurse three years ago with one child.

This tragic development comes amid ongoing discussions about the pressures faced by security personnel in the line of duty.

Police officers commit suicide

In 2021, a police officer with the Legal and Prosecutions Unit in Ashaiman allegedly committed suicide in Tema Community 18.

The Tema Regional Police Command said DSP Asiam Divine Yao shot himself in his Bortiman residence.

The 50-year-old reportedly died in the early hours of Sunday, February 14, 2021, after being rushed to the Police Hospital.

Also, a police officer with the National Protection Unit (NPU), Constable Eugene Yelnona, reportedly committed suicide by shooting himself in the Greater Accra Region on Monday, February 1, 2021.

On January 30, the Half Assini District Police Commander, Supt Cyprian Zenge, was reported to have shot himself in his house.

That brought to three the number of men in uniform who have allegedly taken their own lives.
