At least 14 people have been arrested across the country in connection with various forms of malpractice during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), authorities have confirmed.

The suspects, who include some invigilators, teachers, and candidates, were picked up by law enforcement officers following reports of cheating, impersonation, and attempts to smuggle unauthorised materials into examination centres.

They were arrested at Yeji Senior High School, Abbott College in Asante Bekwai, Atwima Kwanwoma Presbyterian SHS, and several other examination centres nationwide.

According to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the arrests form part of a nationwide operation to clamp down on examination fraud and safeguard the integrity of the WASSCE.

The Head of Public Affairs at the West African Examination Council (WAEC), John Kapi, addressing the media, said the number of arrests continues to rise. Those apprehended will face prosecution after investigations are concluded, he stated.

He revealed that the Adventist Day Senior High School examination centre in Kumasi had been shut down after officials confiscated multiple mobile phones. The affected candidates were subsequently relocated to the WAEC regional office to continue with the exams.

He further cited several incidents, including the arrest of two impersonators at Kasoa who were each sentenced to six months in prison, while their accomplice received an eight-month jail term.

In a related development, the proprietor of Christian School in Kukurantumi and a teacher were apprehended for creating a WhatsApp group to circulate examination questions to students.

At Abura Dunkwa, one Ebenazer Fynn was also arrested for impersonation and is currently under further investigation.

Kapi stressed that WAEC remains resolute in protecting the credibility of the examinations and will not hesitate to impose stringent sanctions against malpractice.

The 2025 WASSCE began with thousands of final-year students sitting for the examinations across the country.
